Estimating a Mural

·  Estimate
For an accurate estimate, a site visit is required. I offer a free estimate for the price of murals (travel expenses may be incurred for extended travel – generally outside of Rhode Island).  This estimate will be a reasonable guideline as to the price of your commission.  It is basically a rough outline of the intended work, time periods, preparation work, arrangements for travel and accommodation if necessary, etc.

·  Sketches and Booking
Once we have agreed on the estimate price, I require a $200.00 sketch and booking deposit. This deposit retains my services to paint your mural and covers initial drawings I will sketch and/or paint to finalize your design.  The deposit is nonrefundable, but will be directly credited toward the final price of the mural.  I will begin sketching your plan so that we both have a true visualization of what the final mural will look like. This is where we can make any changes that need to be made without incurring additional fees.

·  Contract and Commission
This is where the commission starts. After we agree on the final design, you will receive a contract that sets up our agreement; the price, responsibilities, liability, etc.  At this point, I will require a 20% payment to purchase supplies and begin work on your mural.  Special equipment- scaffolding, etc.- will be separately negotiated.

·  Scheduling
Sometimes a project can begin immediately. It is often possible to work around business hours - either late at night, or early in the morning. The scheduling of a project may be flexible and will be discussed at time of contract.

·  Painting the Mural (The Fun Part!)
Furnishings in the room can often simply be moved to the center of the room and covered with drop cloths. Though, sometimes you may need to clear the space out entirely to make room for ladders, scaffolding, etc. Plastic and drop cloths will be used to protect your floors.  A drawing is roughly sketched on the walls and the painting will begin. I generally use water based semi-gloss latex house paint and acrylic paints which are nontoxic and clean up easily without any danger of fumes, solvents, stains, etc.  After the mural is finished, I apply a coat of clear varnish/lacquer that will protect the mural and allow it to be cleaned with simple cleaners, soap and water.  This is very convenient, especially in children’s rooms.   Final payment is due when the on site mural is finished.  (Note: The intended wall or work area must be clean and free of wallpaper. All prep work should be done prior to the start of the project.)
